Sabak Salai in Pedas is a lip-smacking experience

Sabak Salai, Pedas, Negeri Sembilan.

Our destination of the day is Resipi Sabak Salai, a rather popular spot located just 2 km absent from the Pedas exit point on the North-South Highway.

Sabak Salai has a very simple set-up not unlike most Malay roadside restaurants – zinc roof, electric fans, tables and chairs, but no walls or air conditioning.

What you do get though, is a good choice of Negeri Sembilan-style dishes – starting with the most important famed – “daging salai” and “itik salai”, or smoked beef and smoked duck, both given the “masak lemak cili api” preparation – with tumeric, coconut milk, and plenty of hot cili padi.

Additionally, they do also offer salt fish, fried chicken, grilled fish, egg plant in sambal and raw vegetables or “ulam”, plus loads more.

Whatever you decide to eat, keep some space in your stomach for their smoked beef or smoked duck that comes with a healthy portion of a yellow, spicy-thick broth that’s perfect with steamed rice.

The in-house smoked beef is the star here – and the somewhat sweet but smokey flavour of the meat is rather delicious.

The thick and creamy broth meanwhile is the perfect accompaniment because it it spicy and wealthy.

If dining-in isn’t enough, they also sell vacuum-packed smoked beef as well as the “masak lemak” gravy you can cook at domestic.

Instead of the normal R&R meal, do consider stopping over at Pedas for a meal on your next trip down South.
